Baldwin Business Council

Many business people contend business networking is a more cost-effective method of generating new business than advertising or public relations efforts.

maylanThe Baldwin Business Council is throwing a party, and you are invited! 

We are a group of diverse business owners, entrepreneurs and professionals who have learned that working as a team runs circles around trying to go it alone. We meet once a week and share ideas, give referrals and help each other grow our businesses.  In just the past year we have passed more than 155 leads resulting in $112,000 in business within the group.  There is a sense of camaraderie, accountability and laughter as we learn from each other, as well as from our special guest speakers.

April 11th is going to be a great morning in our group for two reasons. 

First, we are inviting anyone who wants to promote and grow their business to visit our group and try it on for size.  It’s a great way to meet other Eastern Shore professionals and learn what the BBC is all about.  We’ll even toss in a free breakfast and a priceless view of our bay.

Secondly, we have the privilege of hearing from noted speaker Maylan Newton.  Maylan is an AMI accredited instructor and continues to be in high demand to present at the major trade shows and association events across the country. We sincerely hope you consider putting this casual invite on your calendar. 

Our goal is network with other professionals and looking for opportunities to help grow our businesses.  If that sounds like something you could benefit from, consider yourself welcome. We hope to see you there!

Tax help available in Orange Beach

The tax man is coming and if you need help on preparing and filing your taxes volunteers working the AARP will again be offering their services here.

Beginning on Feb. 3 and continuing every Tuesday and Friday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., some taxpayers are eligible for help at the Orange Beach Adult Activity Center. The center is located on Canal Road in Orange Beach next to the public library.

According to Ed Nowicki, coordinator of the tax volunteers, low to moderate income earners can the center at 251-981-3440 to make an appointment for the service.

“I’ve been doing it in Orange Beach about 10 years,” Nowicki said. “AARP has been doing it forever I think. Last year in Orange Beach we helped 265 people. Both locals and we do snowbirds.”

The preparers are all volunteers who must not only donate their time to prepare taxes, but also for training before the service begins.

“We are all volunteers and we do have to take training every year,” Nowicki said. “And we do have to take a test to be certified by the IRS to do taxes. We do taxes for seniors and we also do a number of younger people who work like in the restaurants and for condo cleaning and stuff like that.”

The service includes filing the forms for taxpayers. Last year the preparers filed taxes for clients from 17 different states.

“We do the taxes on the computers and we electronically file and they can get a refund either by check or direct deposit if they’ve got a refund coming,” he said.
